Discernement Counseling FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Discernment Counseling
What is Discernment Counseling?
It is a structured, short-term process that helps couples gain clarity about whether to stay together, separate, or pursue intensive couples therapy. It is designed for couples where one partner is uncertain about the future of the marriage.
Who is Discernment Counseling for?
For mixed-agenda couples: one partner is leaning in, one is leaning out. If you are unsure whether your relationship can or should continue, this process provides a calm and structured way to decide.
How many sessions are included?
Discernment Counseling is limited to 1–5 sessions. The structure is intentional: the goal is clear decision-making, not long-term therapy.
Why is the first commitment only one session?
Ambivalence is part of this process. The one-session commitment lets you experience the structure without pressure. After the first session, you decide whether it feels helpful to continue.
What happens during each session?
Each meeting includes:
A brief joint conversation
Individual time with each partner
A shared discussion about insights and next steps
This format allows you to speak openly and reflect honestly, without worrying how your partner will interpret your words in the moment.
Why does Discernment Counseling include individual time?
Because couples often come in with different levels of motivation. Individual conversations create space for private reflection, clarity, and emotional safety—essential elements when making a life-changing decision.
What are the three possible paths we may choose?
Path 1: Keep things the same for now (no immediate changes).Path 2: Move toward separation or divorce in a respectful, thoughtful way.Path 3: Commit to a 6-month period of structured couples therapy, with separation off the table during that time.
How is Discernment Counseling different from couples therapy?
Couples therapy assumes both partners want to repair the relationship.Discernment Counseling helps you decide whether you want to repair it. The emphasis is clarity, understanding, and direction—not immediate change.
Is Discernment Counseling available online?
Yes. Services are offered in-person in Northern Virginia and online across Virginia.
